Regardless of where you are in your career as a mental health provider, accepting a new position can be daunting. For Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), accepting an offer at a practice will play a major role in your career growth, work-life balance, and overall quality of providing care.
So, before you accept your next position, be sure to consider the following:
1. Will I be treating patients independently, collaboratively, or both?
Studies show that PMHNPs who have successful careers are those who have support from their work organization, a deep understanding of their role, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Before accepting a new position, ask the following questions:
- Will I be allowed clinical autonomy?
- What does interdisciplinary collaboration look like in this role?
Many organizations, like Elite DNA, integrate mental and behavioral services, working alongside psychologists, therapists, and care coordinators, to provide comprehensive care for patients.
2. Does the organization prioritize patient-centered care?
According to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Integrated Care Position Statement, collaborative care models improve access, reduce fragmentation, and support better long-term outcomes. When providers come together to make clinical decisions, they feel supported and confident, which enables them to provide better mental healthcare.
Ask your hiring manager the following:
- How will this role coordinate patient-centered care?
- How does leadership encourage providers to collaborate across multiple disciplines?
3. How does the organization support provider well-being?
As a PMHNP, it is essential to make your own mental health a priority in your life. Providing mental and behavioral health services can be emotionally draining and even lead to burnout over time.
Having an organization that supports provider well-being should not be an employee benefit, but a vital part of maintaining a healthy work environment.
Ask your hiring manager:
- How does leadership support work-life balance?
- Are there resources for stress management or burnout prevention?
4. Are there opportunities for growth and continued education?
Your next role should also create a blueprint for career growth and professional advancement opportunities within their organization. Quality employers not only invest in their patients, but in the careers of their providers.
It is critical to evaluate the following before accepting a new position:
- Is continuing education supported?
- What does career growth look like for my role within this organization?
